Why We Drone Inspect Roofs in Hail-Prone DFW
If you live in Plano, Frisco, Arlington, or North Fort Worth, you already know the drill. Spring arrives, the sirens go off, and the hail comes down. Roof damage is simply a fact of life in North Texas.
Because severe weather is so common here, the roof is one of the most critical components of any home inspection. A compromised roof will eventually lead to water intrusion, damaged insulation, ruined drywall, and structural rot.
The gold standard for roof evaluation is walking the surface. Whenever it is safe and possible, we put boots on the roof to inspect the shingles, flashing, and penetrations up close. But the reality is that not all roofs can or should be walked.
When Walking the Roof Is Not an Option
There are several reasons why an inspector might not be able to physically walk a roof. The most common is the pitch. Many modern homes in DFW feature steep, complex rooflines that are simply too dangerous to navigate on foot without specialized fall-arrest equipment.
Weather is another major factor. If it has rained recently, or if there is morning frost or high wind, stepping onto a sloped asphalt or metal roof is an unnecessary safety risk. Additionally, certain roofing materials, like fragile clay tiles or older slate, can be easily damaged just by walking on them.
In the past, if an inspector could not walk the roof, they would evaluate it from the ground using binoculars, or inspect what they could see from a ladder at the eaves. That method leaves massive blind spots.

The Drone Advantage
At Sentinel Home Inspections, we believe you deserve a complete picture of your roof, regardless of the pitch or the weather. That is why we utilize advanced drone technology.
When a roof is too steep to climb, we launch a drone equipped with a high-resolution 4K camera. This allows us to fly inches above the surface and capture incredibly detailed images of the entire roof structure. We can zoom in closely on individual shingles, ridge vents, and chimney flashing.
This level of detail is crucial in North Texas. Hail damage can sometimes be subtle from the ground, but a 4K drone camera will clearly show the bruising, granule loss, and exposed fiberglass matting that indicate a compromised shingle. We can spot cracked sealant around plumbing vents, slipped shingles in the valleys, and flashing that has pulled away from the chimney.
Using Every Resource Available
A drone does not replace the expertise of a trained inspector. It is a tool that extends our reach. It gives us the option of inspecting every square inch of a steep or inaccessible roof and capturing high-resolution evidence of any damage that may cause leakage or problems in the future.
When you are buying a home in a hail-prone market like DFW, you cannot afford blind spots on your roof inspection. We use every resource we have to ensure you know exactly what is over your head.
If you need a comprehensive home inspection that leverages the best technology available, schedule your inspection with Sentinel Home Inspections.
